Employment Act MasterClass

The Employment Act is the basic labour law governing employment relations in Singapore. It provides the basic terms and conditions of employment, spelling out the rights and obligations of employers and employees. To a greater extent, this act imposes labour discipline on employees and provides avenues for employers to deny them statutory benefits in the event of breach of discipline.

It is important therefore that, in both unionized and non-unionized environments, HR practitioners, supervisors, line-managers and executives, who have dealings with subordinates, have a good understanding and appreciation of the Employment Act to minimize disputes on employment issues with their staff and their union (if any).

Learning Outcome:

To give participants a good understanding of the various provisions of the Employment Act and its application in day-to-day dealing at the workplace. At the end of the MasterClass, participants will be able to answer some typical questions such as:

  1. What are the upcoming and recent changes to the Employment Act?
  2. What can I do if a new employee, who has signed the employment contract, fails to turn up for work?
  3. Can I offer an employee a higher starting pay in lieu of overtime claim?
  4. Is the Annual Wage Supplement (AWS) compulsory under the Employment Act?
  5. Can I ask my staff to work on split shift or 12-hour shift?
  6. Can I refuse to grant annual leave to an employee who is still under probation?
  7. Can an employer dismiss an employee who is frequently on sick leave?
  8. Can an employee use his annual leave to offset his notice period?
  9. How do companies often get into trouble with the labour law?
